Working-age Population Decreases While Aged Population Continues Rising in China

The National Bureau of Statistics recently published the Statistical Bulletin 2012 on National Economy and Social Development, indicating that the total population on mainland China as at the end of 2012 reached 1.354 billion people, a YOY increase of 6.69 million, 190 million people are aged 60 or higher, accounting for 14.3% of the total population, a YOY rise of 0.59%. According to the bulletin, 937 million Chinese people are within the working age group from 15 to 59, 3.45 million fewer than those at the end of the last year, a YOY decrease of 0.6%.
