The Dwelling of the Heart – Exhibition of Xu Xiutang’s Works Opened Yixing September 15th

On the morning of September 15th 2019, The Dwelling of The Heart – Exhibition of Xu Xiutang’s Works was held at Yada Culture & Art Center of Yixing Yangxian Xishan. The Exhibition was organized by Yixing Municipal Progaganda Department and Yada Health Ecologcial Park.

Mr. Shen Jian, Secretary of Yixing Municipal Party Committee and Mr. Xu Xiutang, Chinese Craft Master, Unveiled the sculpture Dong Po.

Mr. Xu Xiutang, one of Chinese craft masters, ranks as one of the representative inheritors of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Program.

Born in 1937, Mr. Xu learned purple sands sculpture from Mr. Ren Jinting, one of purple sands sculpture artists, which laid the foundation for his Chinese painting and calligraphy. Later, he received the training in Chinese Folk Sculpture Tutorial Class jointly organized by Ministry of Light Industry and Central Institute of Arts and Crafts. After that, he started learning at “Central Institute of Arts and Crafts Clay Figure Zhang (Zhang Jinggu)” Studio.

During the past decades, Mr. Xu committed himself to purple sands sculpture and created a new ear for Yixing purple sands sculpture by his works with rich cultural connotation and dedicate artistic conception.

It is reported that the Exhibition is the first personal exhibition of Mr. Xu’s paintings and calligraphies. Nearly 60 pieces of works were created during the recent two years. Most of these calligraphies are about Mr. Su Dongpo. Mr. Su was closely connected with Yixing. He had visited Yixing for many times and had a famous verse on Yixing. His paintings exhibited included pieces copying the ancients and drawings from the nature on mountains, waters and flowers and plants.

Mr. Xu made a special works for this Exhibition – the sculpture of Dong Po. It will be exhibited at Yada Culture & Art Center permanently.

According to Mr. Xu, this Exhibition displays his hobbies in calligraphy and painting. The theme of The Dwelling of The Heart is both for himself and for Mr. Su. For him, the Exhibition is like a report back show on his calligraphy and painting creation, for that began his ceramic sculpture career. For Mr. Su, the Exhibition showed emotional relation between Mr. Su and Yixing.
